I’m looking into making a knitting bowl (a smooth circular bowl with a lip at the top, that a ball of yarn can spin freely in, with a spiral cut into one of the sides to allow the yarn to be pulled out). My needs are split into three sections:
- Finding a seasoned burl of wood
- Using a wood lathe to make the bowl shape.
- Using a variety of wood working tools to create the spiral and lip on top of the bowl.
I’m starting from square one so would appreciate any help in either tools, work space or advice!
Something like this?
Found an Instructable:
Might have a lead on the wood and a wood turner… let me check my notes.
And I have a Dremel you can borrow if you don’t have one yourself
Addressing your needs,
Finding a seasoned burl of wood… the wood doesn’t have to be burl or even seasoned for that matter. I work on a wood lathe all the time and I work primarily with green wood.
Using a wood lathe to make the bowl shape… easy enough
Using a variety of wood working tools to create the spiral and lip on top of the bowl… The tools needed are just your normal wood lathe bowl gouges.
If you require any assistance with any of the above steps… do not hesitate to contact me.
Much appreciated Dave I’ll do that!
